Assateague: Three Generations of Memories

A MINI DOCUMENTARY BY KELLY HECK

My family camping at Assateague Island National Seashore began over 20 years before I was born.

The earliest (dated) pictures I could find are dated 1969. It began with my Aunt Helen (Helen Stout) and her boys, Tommy & Philip. Then my grandmother, Sandy (Sondra Eaton) joined in the annual summer camping trip with her two children, Susie (Susan Heck, my Mom) and Billy (William Eaton II). Friends joined in, and years passed, and the children became adults. My older sister Valerie (Valerie Heck Esmont) and I (Kelly Heck) camped every year of our childhood at Assateague, with Aunt Helen’s granddaughter, Adrienne (Adrienne Weinstein).

This mini documentary is a personal project to highlight just a few of our most cherished memories (and some unexpected funny comments). Interviewed are Helen Stout, Susan Heck, and myself, Kelly Heck. I would have really liked to interview my Grandma, but she wholeheartedly refused (even when I gave her my big puppy eyes and pulled out my grandma-to-mom-to-me inherited snarky skills). Her commentary would have been GOLD, but Aunt Helen and my Mom did wonderfully. And I was just in there to represent all three generations.

As of today (May 16, 2020), all family members mentioned are still with us, enjoying and laughing as we recall the good times at Assateague Island National Seashore. I loved sharing a preview with my Mom this past week, seeing her smile and laugh over the memories shared. And this past weekend, I got to do the same with my grandparents and Aunt Helen.

I hope Assateague: Three Generations of Memories makes your heart smile. And I hope that it encourages you to get out and make your own priceless family fun.
