This is the second time I’ve gotten to photograph Katy & Alex, and this time was extra special because I got to meet Miss April, and the three of them as a family!
Katy suggested Bear Branch Nature Center, located just outside of Westminster, MD. I have been there a lot – for photo sessions but also as a kid. We easily found some beautiful and quaint little spots on the trails. April was wondering just about the whole time who I was and what I was doing, and held strong to a serious gaze, but I kinda love it! She stared me down for most of the session which made for a fun set of family photos. And, we finished just in time as the sky began to open up and sprinkle down.
At this outdoor, wooded portrait session, I knew that natural light could be a bit muggy, and result in deeper and less flattering shadows. To the side I set up a travel studio light with the help of an assistant to fill in and add a little pop of brightness that is hard to achieve naturally under the canopy of trees. So never be worried about the location you want to have photos in – if there isn’t quite enough light, we can bring the light to you.
