Let's Dive into Search Engine Optimization 101:

What is SEO?

"Search Engine Optimization" is the process of maximizing the number of visitors to a particular website by ensuring that the site appears high on the list of results returned by a search engine.

What that means is... ranking organically, without paying for placement, when a person searches for what you sell, what you offer, what you are advertising on your website.

How do you do rank organically? Your organic ranking is dependent on your web presence trustworthiness. A search engine decides your rank placement based on endless factors. But to put it plain and simple - a search engine robot judges if you appear to be a real and legitimate business, that has been around a long time, and will be around a long time. This is heavily based on your website copy and technical aspects and ALL external sources that reference you: your digital footprint.

What do I mean by digital footprint? Your website is a piece of the puzzle - and encompasses your internal SEO. External SEO is the rest of your digital footprint: social media profiles, directory listings, local business listings, association listings, mentions in the press, mentions on other people's websites, video marketing, published articles, mentions for community involvement, guest blog posts... your digital footprint is the giant web of link-building that all points back to your final stop (which in most cases, is your website).

How do you create a digital footprint that the Search Engines will find trustworthy? What Search Engines hate is content that is clearly created for ranking... writing for robots to work the system. What Search Engines LOVE is unique content written for humans. This type of content leads to organic, natural growth over time. That means writing with the end user in mind and developing a positive experience for your audience.

The tips below are veeeeeeeery elementary basics to get you started. And there is LOADS of free information online. If you wish to really delve further, I highly recommend Fuel Your Photos online SEO & Blog Course (FYI - affiliate link). (I am a super slow course-taker, so currently I am still working through their lessons and implementing their teachings.) Fuel Your Photos' target audience is Photographers, but their content is valuable to all!

15 INTERNAL SEO PRO TIPS:

1. Track Visitor Engagement with Google Analytics - it's FREE!
2. Use Keywords and Keyword-Phrases throughout your content.
3. Keywords should have a balance between broad and niche.
4. Make use of formatting (like headings) to emphasize content.
5. Create custom Title Tags for every webpage.
6. Create custom Meta Data content for every webpage.
7. Include Alt Tags on any photos or images of relevance.
8. Consider custom photo and video for at least your home page.
9. Integrate valuable internal and external links into your content.
10. Make sure your anchor text includes keyword descriptors.
11. Use a mobile friendly platform and / or template.
12. Write content regularly for a Blog on your website.
13. Optimize (reduce file size) your photos and graphics for web.
14. Write for HUMANS first, SEARCH ENGINES second.
15. Use readable URLS for your webpage file names.

7 EXTERNAL SEO PRO TIPS:

  1. Build your online presence slowly, not all at once.
  2. Local Business Listings should be filled out manually.
  3. Free options, not subscription.
  4. Find creative ways to link back to your website.
  5. Monitor Brand Mentions with Google Alerts - and take action!
  6. Use your keywords everywhere, just like on your website.
  7. SEO is a forever thing - take one step at a time.

Ongoing External SEO Efforts To Consider:

  • Social Media Marketing
  • Blogging & Guest Blogging
  • Publication Ops
  • Press Releases & Interview Ops
  • Local Business Listings
  • Industry & Membership Profiles
  • Video Marketing (& Closed Captioning)
