The real reasons your visual content isn’t performing — and how to turn it around fast.

Introduction: The Hard Truth About Conversion-Focused Photography

You can have the prettiest photos in the world and still watch your website, ads, and social content underperform. And here’s why:

Pretty doesn’t equal strategic.
Pretty doesn’t equal profitable.
Pretty doesn’t equal persuasive.

If your brand photos aren’t built with intention — built to guide your audience, enhance your messaging, and reinforce your brand identity — conversion simply won’t happen at the level it could.

This article breaks down the most common reasons photographs fail to convert, how to identify these weak spots, and what fixes will give your business the biggest ROI.

Whether you’re DIY-ing, piecing together stock, or working with a photographer already, this is the blueprint for making your visual content work harder.

Let’s dig in.

1. Your Photos Don’t Match Your Messaging (Big ROI Killer)

You’d be shocked how often this happens.

Your brand says: “Fast. Modern. Professional. Organized.”

But your visuals say: “Slow. Dated. Inconsistent. DIY.”

The brain processes images 60,000x faster than text. If the photos contradict your message — even subtly — the audience will believe the photos every time.

Your visuals and copy MUST align.

If you sell professionalism, your images need to look professional.
If you sell luxury, your images need to look elevated.
If you sell joy and ease, your images should look warm and inviting.

2. Your Images Lack an Emotional Anchor

People buy emotionally, justify logically.

If your photos are:

  • Too sterile
  • Too posed
  • Too product-only
  • Too generic
  • Or overly “corporate”

Your audience won’t connect.

Emotional anchors look like:

  • People interacting
  • Genuine smiles
  • Hands in action
  • Someone experiencing your service
  • Behind-the-scenes moments
  • Real clients (not stock-perfect models)

This is especially important for service-based businesses, where trust is the sale.

3. Your Lighting Is Killing Your Credibility

Lighting is one of the biggest subconscious trust signals online.

Dark, uneven, or overly warm images say:
❌ “Unprofessional”
❌ “Low quality”
❌ “Outdated”

Bright, clean, crisp lighting says:
✔ “Trustworthy”
✔ “Stable business”
✔ “Worth your time and money”

Even a fantastic composition can underperform if the lighting isn’t dialed in.

4. Your Website Is Using the Wrong Crops and Aspect Ratios

This is a big one — and so many businesses don’t realize how much it affects conversions.

Common crop issues:

  • Important details cut off
  • Faces awkwardly cropped
  • Photos too tall for website banners
  • Horizontal images forced into vertical spaces
  • Website hero images too busy for overlay text

Bad cropping destroys clarity and clarity is the #1 factor in whether someone stays on your website or clicks away.

If users can’t instantly understand what they’re seeing, they bounce.

5. Your Photos Don’t Show the Outcome

People aren’t buying your product or service — they’re buying the transformation.

If your photos don’t show the after, the result, or the benefit

Your audience stays in hesitation mode.

Transformation shots could include:

  • A completed project
  • A happy customer
  • A clean, final deliverable
  • The emotional payoff
  • The “what success looks like” moment

These images move people through the sales funnel MUCH faster.

6. Your Visual Brand Style Is Inconsistent

Inconsistency confuses and repels buyers.

If your photos:

  • Have different color styles
  • Range from warm to cool
  • Switch between natural and studio looks
  • Are a mix of professional + phone photos
  • Use different editing styles

Then your brand’s identity gets muddy.

And a muddy brand never converts well.

Consistency is the gateway to trust.
Trust is the gateway to conversion.

🌿 Pro Tip: This is exactly why my clients love the Photography Consulting Program — it establishes clear creative direction AND a repeatable visual style.

7. Your Photos Aren’t Optimized for the Platforms You’re Using

A killer photo can still fail if it’s delivered in the wrong format.

For example:

  • Square images don’t perform well in Stories
  • Horizontal images crop terribly on mobile landing pages
  • Vertical images aren’t ideal for website heroes
  • Low-res photos look blurry in print
  • Cropping the same image for every platform guarantees poor results

Different platforms reward different orientations, dimensions, and focal points.

If you want conversions, you have to feed each platform the right format.

8. You’re Not Using Enough People-Focused Imagery

Humans connect with humans.

If all your photos are:

  • Buildings
  • Products
  • Equipment
  • Spaces
  • Objects

You’re missing the most powerful conversion tool:
people.

People images create:

✔ Emotional connection
✔ Credibility
✔ Approachability
✔ Energy
✔ Trust

This is why my brand sessions always incorporate a mix of:

  • Headshots
  • Team collaboration
  • Client interaction
  • Lifestyle moments
  • Leadership portraits

➡ Explore how this looks in real sessions: Brand Photography Showcase

9. You Haven’t Updated Your Photos in Years

This seems obvious, but it’s incredibly common.

If your brand hasn’t been photographed since:

  • Your team changed
  • Your services changed
  • Your pricing changed
  • Your brand colors changed
  • Your space changed
  • You added new products
  • You updated your logo
  • Or we’ve rolled through 2–3 new iPhone models…

It’s time.

Old photos equal outdated energy.
Outdated energy equals hesitation.
Hesitation kills conversions.

How to Fix These Issues (Fast + Effectively)

Let’s keep this simple.

Step 1: Audit your current photos.

Walk through your website and social feeds asking:

  • Does this match my brand voice?
  • Does this feel trustworthy?
  • Does this look intentional?
  • Does this represent where my business is going?

Step 2: Identify your biggest visual gaps.

Most businesses find 3–5 major issues quickly.

Step 3: Build a strategic 2026 shot list.

This ensures your next photoshoot is efficient and ROI-driven.

Step 4: Work with a photographer who thinks strategically.

Not just pretty pictures — strategic, high-performing visual assets.

This is exactly what my brand clients hire me for.

Future-proof your brand with a strategic annual photography plan.

Introduction: Why Every Business Needs a 2026 Visual Roadmap

2026 is going to be a big year for brands that invest in strong, intentional imagery — and a tough year for businesses that still rely on outdated headshots, random iPhone pics, or mismatched photos pulled from different sources over the last 5 years.

The truth is simple: Your photos are the first impression of your business. Before a client reads a word of your website, they’re judging whether your brand looks sharp, trustworthy, modern, and aligned with their needs.

A strategic library of professional photos sets the tone for your entire year — across your website, social profiles, ads, hiring pages, sales funnels, email marketing, press kits, and more.

If you want consistent growth and a competitive edge in 2026, you need a plan.
This guide breaks down the 12 essential photos every business should prioritize this year, why they matter, and how to use them to strengthen your marketing return on investment.

Let’s get you set up for success.

1. Updated Team Headshots (Consistency = Credibility)

Nothing dates a business faster than mismatched or outdated headshots.
If your team page looks like a collage of different years, different lighting, and different phone cameras, it’s time to refresh.

Why this matters:

  • Headshots humanize your business
  • Consistent lighting and backgrounds improve brand trust
  • Modern headshots increase conversions on your website and LinkedIn

➡ Explore examples: Headshot Photography at KHP

2. Leadership Portraits (Your Executive Presence Matters)

These aren’t the stiff, corporate portraits of the early 2000s. In 2026, leadership images are bold, editorial, and story-driven.

Where these get used:

  • Press features
  • Conference speaking pages
  • Media requests
  • Annual reports
  • LinkedIn thought-leadership content

If your executive team wants to look like industry authorities, elevate your leadership portraits.

➡ See environmental portrait inspiration: Brand Photography

3. A Strong Website Hero Banner Image

Your website hero is your brand’s handshake. It’s the single most important image on your website — and it needs to say:

“This is who we are. This is what we do. This is why you can trust us.”

Hero images should be:

  • Wide-format, high-resolution
  • Clean and easy to read with text overlays
  • On-brand with your color palette
  • Updated annually

Don’t let this one get stale.

4. Service or Product Demonstration Photos

People understand faster when they can see what you do. Explainer images increase clarity, reduce customer hesitation, and boost conversion rates.

Examples:

  • A contractor measuring a frame
  • A designer reviewing mockups
  • A medical practice demonstrating equipment
  • A product being held, used, opened, assembled

Use these in:

  • Landing pages
  • Sales decks
  • Online stores
  • Social ads

5. Customer Experience Photos

These are pure gold. They showcase how customers interact with your business and how you deliver value.

Think:

  • Smiling clients
  • Consultations
  • Product handoffs
  • Packaging moments
  • Finished results

Experience photos build emotional trust — something stock photography can never achieve.

6. Behind-the-Scenes Shots

2026 is the year of transparency. People want to see the real humans, tools, and processes behind what you do.

Why BTS works:

  • Makes your brand more relatable
  • Boosts engagement on social
  • Shows craftsmanship and care
  • Creates trust

These images fill the gaps in your content calendar, so you always have something authentic to post.

7. Vertical Social-Media-Ready Images

Vertical is king — Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Facebook Reels, and increasingly mobile-first websites.

Stop cropping horizontals and start planning verticals intentionally.

➡ See how vertical images enhance brand storytelling: Brand Photography Portfolio

8. Office or Workspace Tour Photos

Your space tells your story. Even if your office, warehouse, studio, or shop isn’t glamorous, showcasing it builds credibility.

Especially helpful for:

  • Service-based businesses
  • Manufacturing
  • Healthcare
  • Agencies and studios
  • Contractors

These images improve hiring AND customer trust.

9. Team Collaboration Photos

Teamwork shots are some of the most repurposable images you’ll ever own. Use them for:

  • Careers pages
  • About pages
  • Recruiting ads
  • Internal culture pieces
  • Social media
  • Press kits

They communicate energy, communication, and growth — all core brand attributes.

10. Seasonal Content Images

You’re going to need them anyway — for spring promotions, summer updates, fall campaigns, and holiday announcements. Stop scrambling each season with last-minute DIY content. Plan four seasonal looks during one annual brand session to stay ahead of schedule.

11. Testimonial or Client-Feature Photos

Want your reviews to hit harder? Pair them with a portrait of the customer or client — or a photo of your team serving them.

Why this works:

  • Paired visuals can increase testimonial impact by 300%
  • Makes reviews more believable
  • Improves case study engagement

12. A Brand Library of Detail Photos

This is your secret weapon. Authentic filler images — hands at work, textures, tools, materials, décor, branded props — keep your website, emails, and social posts looking cohesive and full.

Perfect for:

  • Blog headers
  • Email campaigns
  • Background graphics
  • Website sections
  • Social quote posts

A strong brand library saves you time AND money.

This time of year, businesses and families alike are racing to send out their annual greetings. Whether you’re mailing cards or sending e-blasts, how you share your message matters, because it’s not just a photo, it’s a connection.

Here’s my golden rule: Make it feel like you.

Your greeting doesn’t need to be polished within an inch of its life. Some of my favorite holiday cards are a little silly, a little heartfelt, and always real. For me, that means using an actual photo… me behind the camera, my kids wrapped tight in my unusually long arms, or a sweet (and slightly chaotic) moment of creativity.

But for others, authenticity might mean something different:

  • A clean, professional team portrait that celebrates your people
  • A candid shot of your workspace or community
  • A photo of your team volunteering or supporting a cause
  • A simple flat lay of your brand’s holiday vibe
  • Or even a heavily Photoshopped digital masterpiece of holiday shenanigans!

Whatever feels true to you will always make the best impression.

My Top 5 Favorite Places to Order Custom Holiday Cards

(KHP-approved, photographer-tested, and recommended for every style & budget)

Below are my go-to picks for ordering holiday cards — whether you’re sending to clients, customers, partners, family, or your entire mailing list. Each one is great for a slightly different reason, so I’ve broken it down by quality, price, minimum order, design experience, and who it’s best for.

And YES — all of these companies typically offer very strong Black Friday promos, often between 20–50% off, plus free shipping or free upgrades. If you’re ordering in November, you’ll save.

⭐ 1. Minted

Best for: High-end designs, luxe upgrades, and “wow” factor.
Why I recommend it:

  • Minted’s designs are created by independent artists — the templates look elevated and modern.
  • Paper options are premium and feel expensive in-hand.
  • Tons of foil, vellum, embossing, hand-pressed, and luxe finishing options.
  • Excellent color accuracy for photos.

Minimums: Very small batch friendly — you can order as low as 10–20 cards.
Price range: Usually higher-end ($2–$4 per card before sales), but Black Friday discounts typically run 20–35% off.
Style Vibe: Clean, stylish, “Pinterest-perfect,” gift-worthy quality.

⭐ 2. Vistaprint

Best for: Business owners who want quality, bulk-friendly pricing, and fast turnaround.
Why I recommend it:

  • Fantastic for companies sending 100–1,000+ cards.
  • Budget-friendly, especially in larger quantities.
  • Their design interface is easy to use with drag-and-drop branding.
  • Paper upgrades are solid without getting pricey.

Minimums: You can order batches as small as 10–25, but bulk pricing is their sweet spot.
Price range: Typically $0.80–$2.00 per card depending on quantity and finish; Black Friday sales are usually 30% off or more.
Style Vibe: Clean, professional, customizable for brand consistency.

⭐ 3. Mpix

Best for: Photographer-approved print quality + beautiful color and paper.
Why I recommend it:

  • Mpix is my personal go-to for all things photo printing — their color accuracy is unmatched.
  • Their card designs are clean and simple, but absolutely beautiful.
  • You can upload full-bleed photo layouts for total creative control.
  • Paper thickness is nicer than what you get from big-box card sites.
  • Offers both flat cards AND folded cards.

Minimums: Very small-batch friendly — often as low as 8–10 cards.
Price range: Mid-tier ($1.20–$2.50 per card), but quality justifies it. Black Friday discounts are usually 25–40%.
Style Vibe: Clean, photo-forward, elevated but not flashy. Perfect for families and small businesses.

⭐ 4. Miller’s

Best for: Pro-level lab quality + heirloom paper for those who want the best of the best.
Why I recommend it:

  • Miller’s is the professional lab behind Mpix — same ownership, higher-level options.
  • STUNNING paper selections (linen, pearl, recycled, luxe cotton, etc.).
  • Sharper prints and richer color depth than consumer labs.
  • Perfect for businesses that want an “elevated but understated” card.
  • Usually a favorite for photographers, creatives, and brands who appreciate craftsmanship.

Minimums: Small batches available, though some specialty papers require higher minimums.
Price range: Higher-end ($2–$4+ per card depending on finish), but worth it for premium client impressions. Black Friday deals often 20–30%.
Style Vibe: Modern, minimal, luxurious. This is the lab you choose when you care about details.

⭐ 5. Shutterfly

Best for: Families, colorful designs, and easy “just get it done” ordering.
Why I recommend it:

  • Super user-friendly for quick layouts.
  • Great for families who want bright, bold designs.
  • Tons of template options, and lots of seasonal deals.
  • A good balance of convenience, affordability, and fun design choices.
  • They frequently run very deep sales around the holidays.

Minimums: Small batches okay — 10 or 20 in most formats.
Price range: Typically $1.00–$2.75 per card before sales; Black Friday discounts often 40–50% off (one of the best sale periods they offer all year).
Style Vibe: Fun, cheerful, colorful, and kid-friendly.

Best Printer Cheat Sheet:

✔ Best Photo QualityMpix
✔ Best for BIG Orders (100+)Vistaprint
✔ Best Sales / DiscountsShutterfly
✔ Best for SMALL OrdersMpix, Minted, & Shutterfly

💡 Bonus tip: Choose a message that feels personal, even if it’s short. “Warmest wishes from the (Your Business) team” or “Thank you for making our year brighter” goes a long way.

Keep an eye out for my own family holiday card reveal next month! It’ll hit your inbox in December!

How to Leave a Lasting Impression with Your Holiday Greeting by Kelly Heck Photography

Pst… It’s Never Too Late to Send Your Greetings

Let’s be honest… the stretch from Thanksgiving to Christmas can feel like a sprint, especially for business owners. If you missed that traditional window for sending your company’s holiday greetings, here’s your friendly reminder: it’s not too late.

The New Year is actually one of my favorite times to send cards. A “Happy New Year” message feels fresh, intentional, and often lands in your clients’ hands right when they’re clearing out their inboxes and planning for the year ahead.

It’s the perfect moment to stand out… while everyone else’s holiday greetings have already been opened, yours arrives like a bright, cheerful reset.

So if your December calendar got away from you (and whose doesn’t?), don’t panic. January is your second chance to connect, and honestly, it might even leave a stronger impression.

(Hint: Now’s a great time to schedule a quick photo session for your 2025 greetings. You’ll thank yourself later!)

Visual storytelling is everything in today’s marketing world — and photography sits at the heart of it. But even great photos can underperform if they’re not used strategically. Enter artificial intelligence (AI) — the toolset that’s changing how small businesses create, share, and maximize their visuals.

AI tools are transforming how businesses use photography to connect with customers, drive sales, and enhance their marketing strategies. Whether you’re working with professional photographers or using your own images, AI-powered tools can streamline your process and elevate your visuals. (See also: How to Inspire and Leverage User-Generated Content for Your Small Business.)

Here’s how AI can elevate your photography marketing in 2025.

How AI is Boosting Photography Marketing

AI tools provide a range of benefits to small businesses by maximizing the power of photography in marketing. Here’s how:

Enhancing Photo Quality

AI tools like automatic retouching and content-aware fill can adjust lighting, remove distractions, and improve image quality—helping even DIY photos look professional and on-brand. (For a deeper look at why professional visuals matter, read Why Professional Photography is Worth the Investment.)

Streamlining Content Creation

AI can quickly generate captions, blog posts, email copy, or ads that complement your visuals and resonate with your target audience, saving time and effort in content creation.

Personalizing Marketing Campaigns

By analyzing customer data, AI can suggest the most relevant photos for different audience segments, ensuring that your visuals align with customer interests and preferences.

Optimizing Visual Performance

AI can track how photos perform across various platforms, providing insights on which images generate the most engagement. It also offers suggestions for optimizing visuals to enhance future campaigns.

Repurposing Photos for Maximum Reach

With AI tools, you can easily transform photos into different marketing assets, such as slideshows, GIFs, or video content, extending the lifespan of your visuals and increasing their impact.

AI Tools Every Small Business Using Photography Should Try

Here’s a curated list of AI-powered tools that can take your photography marketing to the next level — whether you’re editing, designing, or analyzing performance.

1. Adobe Photoshop & Adobe Lightroom (AI Auto-Enhance)

AI features like Content-Aware Fill and Auto Enhance instantly refine lighting, remove distractions, and polish details — perfect for turning your raw or DIY photos into professional-quality visuals.

2. Canva (AI-Powered Design)

Create social posts, ads, and banners in minutes with Magic Resize and AI layout suggestions. Great for non-designers who want to showcase their photos in a clean, branded way. Learn more about building a consistent visual brand through photography.

3. Pictory (AI Video Creation) |

Transform still photos into short videos or slideshows for platforms like Instagram and TikTok. It’s an easy way to repurpose photos into dynamic, high-impact marketing content.

4. Pixlr (AI Photo Editor) |

Simple background removal, color correction, and enhancement tools make even quick phone photos look polished and consistent across your brand.

5. HubSpot (AI-Powered CRM & Analytics) |

Use built-in AI insights to track how your visuals perform across campaigns, emails, and ads — helping you double down on the imagery that drives engagement.

6. DeepAI (Image Recognition & Tagging) |

Automatically analyze, tag, and organize your photo library, making it easier to find the perfect image for any campaign or audience.

7. Grammarly (AI for Captions & Copy) |

Generate clean, on-brand captions and photo descriptions that sound professional, natural, and engaging — no overthinking required.

✅ Pro Tip: Pair one visual AI tool (like Photoshop or Canva) with one strategy tool (like HubSpot or Grammarly). You’ll save time, stay consistent, and see exactly which visuals are converting for your business.

How to Get Started with AI Tools in Photography Marketing

But remember: AI doesn’t replace creativity — it amplifies it. The best results still come from authentic images, smart strategy, and a human touch.

1. Audit Your Photography

Organize your professional and DIY photos, and identify images with strong potential for marketing use. Determine which photos need enhancement and optimization.

2. Set Clear Objectives

Define what you want to achieve with AI-powered tools. Whether it’s improving the quality of your visuals, increasing engagement, or repurposing content, knowing your goals will help guide your efforts.

3. Start Simple

Begin by using accessible tools like Canva or Pixlr to enhance and repurpose existing photos. These tools offer beginner-friendly AI features that yield high-quality results.

4. Experiment with Free Tools

Many AI tools offer free trials or basic versions. Take advantage of these to find the best-fit tools for your business without the financial commitment.

5. Measure and Optimize

Use platforms like HubSpot to track the performance of your photos across different marketing channels. Use AI insights to make data-driven adjustments to your strategy.

Once your visuals are organized and your goals set, it’s time to plan your next photoshoot. Here are 8 Ways to Prepare for Your Branding Photography Session.

Real-World Example: AI in Action for Photography

Here’s what that looks like in action.

For example, imagine a boutique clothing store partnered with a professional photographer for a seasonal shoot. Using Canva’s AI design tools to create branded social posts — and repurposing those same photos into short slideshows with Pictory — the store increased Instagram engagement by 35% and boosted online sales by 20% within two months.

This example shows how powerful AI can be when used to repurpose and optimize photography for maximum impact. Small, intentional steps can create big results fast.

The Future of AI in Photography Marketing

As AI technology continues to evolve, small businesses will have even more opportunities to harness the power of photography in their marketing. Whether you’re showcasing products, telling your brand’s story, or creating memorable ads, AI tools will make it easier to optimize photos, personalize campaigns, and engage your audience in new and exciting ways.

User-generated content (UGC) is a highly effective, budget-friendly marketing tool for small businesses. Whether it’s a customer’s Instagram photo showcasing your product, a glowing review, or a fun video of your service in action, UGC builds trust and creates authentic connections with your audience. Even better, it’s often free and can produce remarkable results.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to inspire UGC, seamlessly integrate it into your marketing strategy, and use professional photography to enhance its effectiveness.

Why User-Generated Content Matters

  • Builds Trust: Authentic photos, reviews, and testimonials from real customers are much more trusted than traditional ads.
  • Cost-Effective: UGC comes at little or no cost, making it an ideal solution for small businesses with limited marketing budgets.
  • Boosts Engagement: UGC sparks real-time interactions, creating a two-way conversation between your business and your audience.
  • Enhances Authenticity: UGC humanizes your brand, making it more relatable and appealing to potential customers.

How to Inspire User-Generated Content

1. Create a Branded Hashtag

Encourage your customers to use a memorable hashtag when sharing their photos or videos with your products. For instance, a fitness brand could use #FitWith[YourBusinessName] to encourage customers to share their workout photos. Or another example – when it’s time for annual reviews, an investment advisor could encourage clients to “take a selfie” and share their experience with #GrowWith[YourBusinessName].

Pro Tip: Promote your hashtag across all platforms: social media, emails, your website, and even in-store displays.

2. Host a Photo Contest

Run a contest encouraging customers to submit photos of your products in use or them shopping your store. Offer a small prize such as a discount, a gift card, or free products. This often results in a surge of creative UGC submissions.

Professional Photo Tip: Use high-quality professional images in your contest promotions to set the bar high for the content customers submit.

3. Ask Directly

Don’t be afraid to ask your customers for UGC! A simple social media post or email inviting them to share their experience with your product can drive submissions.

Example Prompt: “We love seeing how you use our products! Tag us and use [hashtag] for a chance to be featured on our page.”

4. Incentivize Participation

Offer small rewards, such as discounts, exclusive offers, or even personalized shoutouts, to incentivize your customers to share their content. A simple “thank you” post can also go a long way in encouraging further engagement.

5. Partner with Influencers

Collaborating with micro-influencers or loyal customers who have a strong social media following can jumpstart your UGC campaign.

Photo-Driven Idea: Send influencers a curated selection of your products, along with professional photos, to help them create content that aligns with your brand’s aesthetic.

Using UGC in Your Marketing Strategy

1. Feature UGC on Social Media

Share customer photos, videos, or testimonials on your social media channels. Always credit the creator to build goodwill and encourage others to share their content.

2. Build UGC Galleries

Create a dedicated gallery on your website where customers can view photos and stories shared by others. This could be a “Customer Gallery” or a “Style Inspiration” page, depending on your business type.

3. Integrate UGC into Ads

Incorporate customer photos and videos into your online advertisements to increase their relatability and authenticity. Pair them with professionally shot photos to maintain a high-quality brand image.

4. Highlight UGC in Email Campaigns

Add customer photos or reviews to your newsletters or promotional emails to personalize your messages and build trust.

5. Combine UGC with Professional Photography

While UGC is valuable for its authenticity, professional photography helps maintain consistency across your brand. Use professional photos for templates, ads, or to complement customer content in campaigns.

Real-Life Example: How UGC and Professional Photography Work Together

A local coffee shop ran a UGC campaign inviting customers to share their favorite drink photos using a branded hashtag. They paired these customer photos with professionally shot images of new menu items in social media posts and ads. The outcome? A 40% increase in engagement and a noticeable uptick in foot traffic.

How to Ensure High-Quality UGC

1. Set Clear Guidelines

Provide your customers with clear tips on creating high-quality photos, such as lighting suggestions, angles that work well, and background recommendations.

2. Offer Examples

Share examples of UGC or professional photos that demonstrate the quality and style you’re aiming for. This can spark creativity and help set expectations.

3. Use Editing Tools

Introduce customers to easy-to-use apps like Canva or Lightroom Mobile to help them enhance their photos before posting.

The Role of Professional Photography in UGC Campaigns

Professional photography enhances your UGC campaigns by:

  • Inspiring Creativity: High-quality images set a standard that encourages customers to produce similar content.
  • Maintaining Consistency: Professional images ensure a consistent brand aesthetic, even when combined with UGC.
  • Creating Polished Campaigns: Use professional photos to support or complement UGC in your marketing materials.

We’ve all seen them: the awkward handshake, the too-perfect team in matching blazers, and that same guy with a headset who shows up on every corporate site. If your business is still relying on stock images—or worse, dated photos from a decade ago—your audience can tell. And whether they realize it or not, they’re judging you for it.

In today’s digital world, your website is your first impression. And nothing tanks that impression faster than generic imagery that feels disconnected from your actual brand.

That’s where professional photography comes in. High-quality, custom imagery does more than just “look nice”—it builds trust, increases engagement, and turns clicks into clients.

Here’s how investing in real photography can completely revamp your online presence:

1. Elevate Your Credibility and Trust

Stock photos tell a generic story. Custom images tell your story—your team, your space, your clients, your product. That authenticity creates immediate trust, which is everything in today’s noisy online world.

2. Create a Memorable Visual Identity

Stock photos are forgettable. Custom brand photography makes you recognizable—with visuals that reflect your tone, values, and personality. It’s the fastest way to stand out across your website, social channels, and campaigns.

3. Boost Engagement and User Experience or “UX”

People process visuals 60,000 times faster than text. Great photography doesn’t just make your website look better—it makes it perform better. Strong images keep people on your site longer, reduce bounce rates, and drive action—whether that’s filling out a form, booking a service, or hitting “buy.”

4. Simplify Complex Messaging

One image can explain what paragraphs of copy can’t. Lifestyle shots, behind-the-scenes glimpses, product-in-action visuals—they all help your audience quickly understand and trust what you offer.

5. Amplify Testimonials and Social Proof

Testimonials work. But pair them with vibrant portraits of the real humans behind those quotes, and the impact multiplies. Photography makes those stories stick.

Bottom line: Stock photos are quick, cheap, and lifeless. Real photography is strategic, targeted, and built to support your marketing goals.

In a world where artificial intelligence seems to be solving everything—from content writing to customer service—it’s tempting for companies to cut corners and turn to AI-generated portraits for their team photos or brand visuals. After all, they’re fast, cheap, and eerily realistic.

But here’s the thing: AI portraits aren’t just a shortcut—they’re a gamble. And that gamble could hurt your brand in ways you haven’t even considered.

As a professional corporate and commercial photographer, I want to break down exactly why real photography is still a crucial part of your marketing strategy—especially when it comes to your online presence, brand credibility, and search engine visibility.

1. Google Knows When It’s Fake

Let’s start with the big one: SEO.

Google is getting smarter every day, and so are its bots. Algorithms now go far beyond scanning for keywords—they analyze image authenticity, context, and even user engagement with visuals.

AI-generated headshots and team portraits may look sharp to the human eye, but search engines can identify when an image lacks metadata, facial authenticity, or natural context. And when Google sees fake people, it starts asking: “Is this business real?”

And the results are damaging. Your site authority drops. Your ranking suffers. You lose visibility to the very clients you’re trying to attract.

2. Your Clients Want to See You

People do business with people. When a potential client visits your website or LinkedIn page, they’re not just looking for your list of services—they’re looking for signs of trust, credibility, and connection.

That means photos of your real team—not AI-generated composites. A clean, cohesive team headshot section on your About page instantly humanizes your brand. It proves there’s a real, accountable group of professionals behind your service. And we all know that authenticity builds trust and trust closes deals.

3. AI Can’t Capture Culture

Corporate photography isn’t just about faces—it’s about vibe. Your work environment. Your values. Your story.

Custom photography tells that story in a way that AI never will. A well-composed environmental portrait shows how your team works, where they thrive, and what it feels like to interact with your brand. That emotional resonance doesn’t just attract clients—it attracts top-tier talent too.

AI headshots? They can’t reflect your real workspace. They can’t capture a genuine laugh from your COO. They can’t show diversity in age, personality, or energy. What they can do is make your team look suspiciously generic… or worse, like they don’t exist.

4. Custom Photos Have Strategic Value

Every image you commission from a professional photographer is an asset. One you can use strategically across platforms: website, email marketing, press releases, social media, recruitment ads, pitch decks—you name it.

Real photographs increase engagement and conversion rates. They’re also built with your brand guidelines in mind—color palette, mood, composition, lighting. AI can’t do that (yet), and even when it tries, it often leads to a disjointed visual identity.

5. Photography Is a Budget Line, Not an Afterthought

If your team is investing thousands in branding, strategy, and web design—but skipping real photography—you’re leaving ROI on the table.

Think of photography as the glue that holds your brand visuals together. It gives consistency, credibility, and connection to all the other pieces of your marketing puzzle.

And unlike AI images, real photos of real people age well. They represent your actual growth, your evolving team, and your real-world wins.

AI is powerful, no doubt. It’s changing industries left and right. But when it comes to who you are as a company—and why clients should trust you—nothing replaces the real thing.

So budget for it. Prioritize it. Hire a photographer who understands your brand. Because in a world where everything is getting faker… being real is your competitive edge.

In 2025, local SEO is more critical than ever for small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) looking to attract nearby customers. A well-optimized  Google Business Profile (GBP) is a key component of local SEO, and professional photography plays a surprisingly powerful role in its success. High-quality images can improve your online presence, build trust with potential customers, and ultimately drive more foot traffic to your location. Here’s how you can leverage professional photography to take your local SEO to the next level.

Why Photos Matter for Local SEO

Google Business Profiles are often the first interaction potential customers have with your business. Photos create an immediate impression – good or bad. According to Google, businesses with high-quality images receive 42% more requests for directions and 35% more click-throughs to their websites than those without. Professional photos:

1. Boost Engagement

Well-lit, clear, and visually appealing images encourage users to spend more time on your profile.

2. Increase Trust

Customers are more likely to visit businesses that showcase authentic, high-quality images.

3. Improve Rankings

Google prioritizes profiles that offer a complete and engaging user experience, including visual content.

Types of Photos That Drive Results

1. Exterior Shots

Showcase your storefront, signage, and parking availability. Include seasonal updates to keep images fresh and relevant.

2. Interior Shots

Highlight the ambiance, cleanliness, and layout of your business. Capture any unique features or designs that set your space apart.

3. Team Photos

Put a face to your business with friendly, professional portraits of your team. Authentic photos help humanize your brand and build trust.

4. Products & Services

Showcase your offerings with high-quality product photography or action shots of your services in action. Include close-ups for details and context images to demonstrate scale or usage.

5. Events & Community Engagement

Post photos of your involvement in local events, charity drives, or customer appreciation days. These images emphasize your community focus and create an emotional connection.

Optimizing Photos for SEO

To ensure your photos have the maximum impact on local SEO, follow these best practices:

1. Use Descriptive File Names

Rename image files with relevant keywords (e.g., “modern-cafe-downtown-interior.jpg”) before uploading.

2. Add Alt Text

Include keyword-rich alt text for every image to improve accessibility and help search engines understand the content.

3. Geotag Your Photos

Embed location data into your photos to signal to Google that your business serves a specific area.

4. Keep File Sizes Manageable

Optimize images for fast loading by compressing file sizes without sacrificing quality. Use tools like TinyPNG or Photoshop.

5. Post Regularly

Update your Google Business Profile with fresh images monthly to show that your business is active and engaged.

Tips for Capturing the Perfect Photos

1. Hire a Professional Photographer

Professionals understand lighting, angles, and composition, ensuring your business looks its best.

2. Showcase Authenticity

Customers want an accurate representation of what to expect, and they want to know the face(s) behind the business.

3. Use Natural Lighting

Natural light adds warmth and authenticity to photos, especially for interiors and product shots.

4. Incorporate Branding

Subtle elements like branded uniforms, logos, or signature colors create consistency across your images.

How Photography Impacts Google Rankings

Google’s algorithm evaluates engagement metrics like click-through rates, time spent on a profile, and user interactions. High-quality, relevant images:

  • Encourage more clicks on your profile.
  • Keep users engaged longer as they browse your photos.
  • Improve reviews as customers arrive with realistic expectations and a positive first impression.

These factors signal to Google that your profile is valuable, which can improve your rankings in local search results.

Stay Ahead in 2025

As competition in local SEO intensifies, investing in professional photography is no longer optional – it’s essential. By creating an engaging and visually appealing Google Business Profile, you can attract more customers, boost trust, and dominate your local market.

The marketing landscape for small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) continues to evolve, and 2025 is shaping up to be the year where visual content takes center stage. Professional photography is no longer just a “nice-to-have”. Photography is a critical tool for businesses looking to connect with their audiences authentically, stand out in competitive markets, and drive results. Here’s how you can stay ahead of the curve by incorporating high-quality photography into these hot marketing trends.

1. Visual Storytelling

In 2025, storytelling isn’t just for writers – it’s for brands too. Customers crave authenticity and emotional connections. Professional photography will help tell your brand’s unique story through captivating visuals, whether it’s behind-the-scenes images, team portraits, or day-in-the-life (AKA: Lifestyle Photography / Personal Branding Photography) shots that humanize your business.

2. Personalized Marketing

Consumers want to feel seen. Custom photography can elevate personalized marketing efforts by creating imagery tailored to your specific customer segments. Lifestyle photography that aligns with your audience’s aspirations resonates far more than generic stock images.

3. User-Generated Content (UGC)

UGC (aka: DIY photography) continues to dominate as a trend, but pairing it with professional photography takes it to the next level. Collaborate with customers or influencers, and enhance their content with professional touches that maintain authenticity while boosting quality.

4. Social Media Reels and Stories

Platforms like Instagram and TikTok are thriving with short-form content. While video is king, eye-catching professional photos are equally powerful for grabbing attention in Reels, Stories, and ads. Blend still photography with animated elements for a hybrid and modern storytelling approach.

5. E-Commerce and Product Listings

As online shopping grows, the competition for attention in e-commerce is fiercer than ever. High-quality product photography is crucial to stand out. Consider innovative approaches like 360-degree photography or interactive images that help customers visualize your products. But make sure you have the basics too – quality still photos are also vital for you individual product pages on your website to live shopping detail photos on your socials.

6. AI-Driven Marketing

AI-powered tools are transforming how businesses reach their audiences, but the quality of your visuals matters even more when paired with these tools. Use professional photography to create dynamic, AI-driven campaigns that adapt to customer behavior seamlessly.

7. Local SEO and Google Business Profiles

Optimizing your Google Business profile is essential for SMBs, and professional photography can make or break that first impression. Showcase your location, team, and offerings with compelling imagery that attracts local customers.

8. Sustainability and Ethical Branding

Consumers increasingly care about sustainability. Use professional photography to showcase eco-friendly practices, ethical sourcing, and your commitment to transparency. A well-crafted image can say more than words ever could.

9. Interactive and Immersive Content

Augmented reality (AR) and interactive visuals are no longer futuristic – they’re now. Professional photos can be integrated into AR experiences, such as virtual try-ons or product demonstrations, to wow your audience and drive engagement.

10. Customer-Centric Content

Testimonials and case studies are more impactful when paired with authentic visuals. Invest in professional photography to feature real customers using your products or services, bringing their personal stories to life in a compelling way.

11. Short-Form Content

Mobile-first platforms like Pinterest, LinkedIn, and YouTube Shorts demand attention-grabbing visuals. Vertical photos optimized for mobile scrolling are an easy way to stand out in feeds filled with distractions.

12. Seasonal and Trending Campaigns

Stay relevant by tying your photography to cultural moments, holidays, or viral trends. Custom seasonal imagery keeps your marketing fresh and engaging, while professional photos ensure your brand remains polished and cohesive.

13. Brand Identity Consistency

Consistency is key to building a recognizable brand. Professional photography helps establish a cohesive visual identity, ensuring that your website, social media, and marketing materials all feel aligned and professional.

Your Competitive Edge: The Power of Bundled Services

Staying ahead in marketing requires not just great ideas but also flawless execution. That’s where full photo service and marketing strategy come in. As a photographer not just specializing in photo service, but photo marketing consulting as well, I am passionate about helping businesses like yours tell their story, create stunning visuals, and build connections that convert.

Let us set the stage… imagine you have booked your photo session. How do we get the most out of our photo time together?

Your “stories” have been decided (learn more about creating your own “stories”), and now it is time to prepare for photo day.

Following are 7 tasks to prepare you for a successful photo session that will result in a breadth of imagery for your marketing needs. The resulting photo collection will elevate your brand, making every second of your prep work worth the effort!

1. Create Your Mood Board

Mood boards are an excellent way to develop your intended look and feel with your branding in mind. Pulling together inspiration photos and color pallets will hone your vision and ensure that your “team” is envisioning the same. Pinterest is the perfect place to search for imagery and be inspired.

2. Select Your Wardrobe

Expect to wear multiple outfits during a single personal branding photo session. Your outfits should mesh with your Mood Board and/or brand. Outfits should be ready to slip into on photo day. Check all final clothing items for any damage that may need attention. Give yourself time for an optional shopping trip to add a few new brand-cohesive clothing pieces and accessories to the mix. (Be sure to ask for Kelly’s exclusive wardrobe and photo day prep tips leading up to photo day!)

3. Gather Your Props

Items you use in your business and everyday life help to bring your story to life. A collection of props ready to grab for your photo session is highly recommended. And just like your wardrobe, doing this in advance gives you time to fill in any gaps. Props also give your hands something to do, while giving you a break from full head-to-toe posing. Check that all your props are clean and ready to use.

4. Test Your Hair & Makeup

Optionally, some biz owners opt for professional Hair & Make-Up. Soliciting the guidance of a wardrobe stylist, make-up artist, and/or hair stylist can be loads of fun!

But honestly, I often encourage clients to do their own hair and makeup. We want you to look like your BEST you… emphasis on the YOU, the YOU that your clients see every day. So be sure to practice and perfect your look for photo day.

And if you opt for the professional approach, I am 100% behind you!

Want some photo-ready hair and makeup tips? Check out this article How To Look Your Best On Camera: Camera-Ready Hair & Makeup Tips for tons of great advice, both from the photographer’s perspective and a professional hair and make-up artist!

5. Prepare Your Location(s)

Once your photo goals and vision are in place, settling on one or more locations is pretty easy. At Home, the Office, the Park, Downtown District, a Coffee Shop, a Client’s Location, etc. But those locations need to be ready-to-photograph. Tidying, simplifying, and cleaning… even staging in advance… can be a huge load off of all those involved in photo day.

6. Set Aside Time for Self-Pampering

Plan a little self pampering in advance of photo day. Hair may need to be trimmed, dyed, and/or styled. Fingernails and Toenails may need to be manicured. Some wild hairs may need trimming or plucking. The night before it is important to pamper your body and soul (drink lots of water, moisturize, and go to bed early).

Self-Pampering is also a mentality. Do the things that bring you joy. Turn up the radio and belt out your fave songs. Run yourself a bubble bath. Enjoy the silence in the car on the way to your photo shoot. Do NOT make photo day more hectic than it needs to be (i.e., don’t over schedule yourself with tasks, chores, calls, meetings, or places to be). Photo day is like ME TIME – protect it like you would anything precious to you.

7. Making a Shot-List from Your “Stories”

A wide variety of photographs can be composed from a single story. Think of each of your stories as if they are being seen by a fly on the wall (that’s me, your photographer). Act out your PERFECT day in your head, and bulletize what you see. What would you want your clients, potential clients, and colleagues to see if you could create a custom experience? These are your stories. And this is what we will photograph.

The next aspect to your shot-list is a logistics approach. Incorporate your personal thoughts on a variety of poses, expressions, props, and outfits throughout your photo day so your photographer can capture a variety of compositions that appear to have been photographed across multiple days. Photographers love capturing different angles, perspectives (close-up vs. far away), and focusing not just on the main subject, but secondary supporting subjects as well.

The final aspect to your shot-list are your technical needs. Where will your new photographs be used? Do the photographs need to be horizontal and/or vertical? Do they need lots of negative space for further designing purposes, like text overlay? Will they be used in a banner on your website or on a printed brochure? Inform your photographer of the planned usage of specific photos so that they can compose with purpose.

8. Schedule a Planning & Review Session

Schedule one last planning and review session with your photographer to make your photo day a wild success. I love to ask my clients for photos of their space or even a live walkabout on a video call. I ask clients to text me their outfit ideas. I love brainstorming stories and shot-lists and props and discussing client’s goals and visions in vast detail. I’ve not had a client that shared too much with me… the more the better!

For myself as a photographer, showing a photograph I shot straight out of camera (RAW) vs. after editing is one of many eye openers as to WHY you hire a professional photographer. But for many of you, you have a profession that benefits from a Before Photo & After Photo, each taken at different times. Capturing the incredible results of your service can be tricky. So how do we create an effective Before & After Photo Set?

Most Before & After Photos are going to be heavily reliant on the exact same shooting conditions. Before & After Photos are presented for comparison purposes, and you want to provide visual accuracy proving one (the after) is better than the other (the before). That means you must give attention to the lighting, angle, perspective, background, styling, and any other elements for both the Before & After Photo.

The approach of a Before & After photo can vary wildly… let’s look at two scenarios:

Business Owner #1 needs a Before & After of a kitchen remodel. In this example, it is mostly important that the space is clearly pictured from similar angles, and the exactness of each replicated shot is not as necessary because obviously the space has had an entire overhaul, lighting included. Not to mention, key anchoring elements may have moved in the remodel. However, it is important to declutter and be sure to capture the essence of the entire space. Your viewers will get the gist.

Business Owner #2 needs a Before & After of the effects of (1) a wrinkle reducing cream, (2) weight loss, (3) muscle tone increase, (4) make-up & hair artistry, (5) scar reduction/removal, etc. In this instance, it is crucial to replicate exact quality lighting, angle/distance/composition, and detail/styling. One shot CANNOT be under fluorescent lights at night, while the other shot is taken during the day with beautiful soft daylight flooding the room. The comparison would be lost due to the lack of consistent environmental factors.

Let’s explore the 3 critical factors that lead to consistent Before & After Photos:

1. Quality Lighting

Find the best lighting you can for your repeating situation. Bounced daylight is the most widely available and beautiful light out there. Bounced light can be found near glass doors, windows… even in shady spots outdoors. Then, be intent about always taking your photos around the same time of day, location, angle, etc. You can even consider using an inexpensive tool like a photographer’s reflector or even a sheet of white foam core (sized appropriately for your subject).

If the above is not doable… perhaps you see physical clients in your salon at all times of day. It might be valuable to invest in a continuous light or lighting system. For example, a ring-light can work wonders! Practice and make sure you get used to the power output of your lighting product, the distance from your subject it should sit, and what lighting angles are best to show off your fine work.

2. Angles, Distance, & Composition

We want our Before & After Photos to illustrate the exact same subject… whether that is a person you fixed up (make-up, hair, nails, facial, sun spot removal, etc.) or a service you provided (painting, rug cleaning, refinishing, upholstery, tattoo cover-up, closet organization, remodeling, etc.). You must be attentive to the details of how your Before Photo was captured to nail your After Photo.

Did you photograph your subject straight on, or at an angle?
What angle… 10 degrees… 45 degrees?

Were you 3 inches away, 5 feet away, or 10 yards away?
You need to know this because perspective shifts as you move closer or farther away from your subject.

Did you zoom in?
How much? 1.5x… 2.0x… 4.0x… 10.0x??

Did you fill the frame?
Did you crop out any elements for an important detail shot?
Was your first photo vertical (portrait) or horizontal (landscape)?

The more closely you replicate your Before Photo, the closer your After Photo will show off your fine work. Your viewers will be focused on the HUGE DIFFERENCE YOU MADE, rather than the inconsistent imperfections of your side-by-side photos.

3. Details & Styling

“Detail Shots” are important, and I think some of you should definitely include them in your photo mix. But what I mean by details and styling is more so about the entire look and feel of your photos. For Before & After Photos, eliminating distractions can make a big impact. We don’t want your viewers pulled away by any distracting elements on your person or in the foreground / background. Make sure your space, if pictured, is as simplified as possible. Or better yet, consider photographing your subject on a backdrop or plain wall, to avoid the hassle of cleaning up and decluttering your space.

There are hacks to making Before & After Photos look wildly different in your favor, but we are not out to trick our potential clientele. While ads can trick viewers into thinking their product or service is effective or sturdier or larger than it truly is in real life, we’re looking to build trust with our audience. By being intentional about the consistency of your Before & After Photos, you can build up your audience and have a higher new and return client rate as you begin to build up your audience’s trust.

In today’s digital landscape, visuals play a pivotal role in capturing audience attention and conveying brand messages effectively. While stock photos offer convenience, they often lack the authenticity and uniqueness that professional organizations strive to achieve. Even so, many website owners are still using cheap photos from stock websites that are either generic or poor quality.

You have 2 seconds for a visitor to decide to stay or go. TWO seconds. This is where custom photography saves the day, offering a myriad of benefits that go far beyond mere visuals. From enhancing brand identity to fostering emotional connections, custom photography holds the key to elevating a brand’s visual storytelling.

Fake images lack the “good stuff” that builds trust and connection. Real photos of you and your company result in the genuine connection that your audience craves! Let’s delve further into all the reasons authentic, unique photographs are so important to building new and stronger connections:

  1. Brand Identity: Custom photography allows professional organizations to showcase their unique brand identity, helping to distinguish them from competitors and create a stronger brand presence.
  2. Authenticity: Custom photography captures real people, products, and locations associated with the organization, conveying authenticity and credibility to the audience.
  3. Tailored to Specific Needs: Custom photography can be tailored to meet the specific needs and objectives of the organization, aligning perfectly with its messaging and goals.
  4. Exclusivity: Custom photography provides exclusive imagery that is not widely available, avoiding the risk of competitors using the same stock photos and diluting brand differentiation.
  5. Control Over Image Content: With custom photography, organizations have full control over the content, ensuring that it accurately represents their brand values, messaging, and target audience.
  6. Unique Visual Storytelling: Custom photography enables organizations to tell their unique story visually, showcasing their culture, values, and mission in a way that resonates with their audience.
  7. Freshness and Originality: Routine custom photography offers fresh and original content that reflects the latest trends and developments within the organization, keeping the visual imagery current and engaging.
  8. Tailored to Target Audience: Custom photography can be specifically tailored to resonate with the organization’s target audience, ensuring that the imagery connects with them on a deeper level and drives engagement.
  9. Flexibility and Adaptability: Custom photography provides flexibility to adapt imagery based on evolving marketing strategies, seasonal campaigns, or changing market dynamics, ensuring relevance and effectiveness.
  10. Enhanced Brand Perception: High-quality custom photography enhances the overall brand perception, signaling professionalism, attention to detail, and investment in quality across all aspects of the organization.
  11. Supports Brand Consistency: Custom photography reinforces brand consistency across various marketing channels, maintaining a cohesive visual identity that strengthens brand recognition and recall.
  12. Emotional Connection: Custom photography has the potential to evoke strong emotions and create a deeper connection with the audience, fostering loyalty and long-term relationships with customers and stakeholders.

Custom photography (instead of stock photos) can significantly impact a professional organization’s brand perception, engagement levels, and long-term success. Studies prove that real photos are more effective… when searching online, 60% of visitors are more likely to contact or consider a company that has an images show up in local search results – just imagine if every photograph you used was custom and unique to your business?

While budgeting for a professional photographer is a commitment, the results often produce an outstanding return on investment. Professional photographers are trained in the technicalities of lighting, composition, and posing to ensure your photographs beautifully tell your story and leave a positive impression. And high quality photographs, taken with a plan and vision, often last a long time – you can use your photos over and over again across various aspects of your marketing efforts.

By leveraging the power of authentic, tailored photography, organizations can create a lasting impression on their audience, forge stronger connections, and stand out in a crowded marketplace. A recent study notes that when you hear a piece of information, three days later you’ll remember 10% of it. Add a picture into the mix, and you’ll remember 65%. From reinforcing brand identity to evoking emotional responses, custom photography serves as a versatile tool that empowers organizations to tell their unique stories and leave a lasting impact on their audience’s minds.

So, the next time your organization seeks to visually communicate its message, remember the invaluable advantages that custom photography brings to the table.

Brainstorming is part of every planning call in preparation for photo sessions. Whether you are a team of 1 or 100, or you have an office venue or shop or you simply work from home, there are so many ways you can visually showcase yourself and your business.

To create a wide variety of images fast, I like to approach photo sessions by staging a story.

In this article, I’ve created a shotlist relatable for everyone in business (though, my emphasis is on a “Boss Babe”, so a little female oriented). My intent is to ensure that YOU can envision yourself in these settings.

There is one thing that every single business owner does to support their business, and that is a day at the home office working on the computer.

So let’s imagine you in work-mode. You don’t have any meetings today, nowhere to go, here’s the story:

Even if you struggle with visualizing, I know you can see some of these images in your mind’s eye. What photos can we pull from this image if the setting is staged?

Let’s begin with breaking out our various Environments:

  1. Room: Home Office
  2. Room: Living Room / Family Room
  3. Room: Kitchen
  4. Outdoor: Facade or Backyard
  5. Outdoor: At the nearest downtown district.

Now, let’s list all the possible photos we can take in each of these FIVE environments:

In Your Home Office

  1. Portrait sitting at desk. Wide angle.
  2. Portrait sitting at desk. Tight angle. Smile to camera.
  3. Working on desktop or laptop with happy expression.
  4. Close-up of fingers typing, subject’s figure out of focus in background.
  5. Taking notes with pen and paper.
  6. Close up of pen to paper.
  7. Reading a favorite book or sheet of paper.
  8. Standing by window in office.
  9. Sitting on corner of desk. Smile to camera.
  10. Working on mood board.
  11. Talking lively on a phone call.
  12. Little details across your office: artwork, houseplants, office supplies, decor, etc.
  13. Over-the-shoulder shot of you from behind typing on your laptop, capturing the screen (showcasing your website, a project you are working on, or something else that speaks to your work).
  14. Organizing papers on your desk, showcasing your workflow.
  15. Adjusting your glasses or tucking back your hair while deep in thought.
  16. Leaning back in your chair, contemplating ideas with a thoughtful expression.
  17. Holding a video conference call with colleagues, with your laptop open and a headset on.
  18. Jotting down ideas on a whiteboard or sticky notes.
  19. Taking a break to stretch or do a quick yoga pose by your desk.
  20. Adding final touches to a presentation, with papers spread out and a satisfied smile.
  21. Holding a brainstorming session with colorful markers and a whiteboard.
  22. Exchanging emails with clients on your smartphone, multitasking between devices.
  23. Celebrating a successful project milestone with a fist pump or high-five motion.
  24. Incorporating branded merchandise or company swag into your office decor for added personality.

In Your Living Room / Family Room

  1. Portrait sitting on couch. Wide angle. Smile to camera.
  2. Portrait sitting on couch. Tight angle. Smile to camera.
  3. Portrait sitting on couch. Wide angle. Laughing, looking away from camera.
  4. Portrait sitting on couch. Tight angle. Laughing, looking away from camera.
  5. Sitting on floor at corner of coffee table. Working on laptop.
  6. Enjoying hot cup of tea.
  7. Cozying up with a blanket and your laptop on the couch, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
  8. Snuggling with a pet while browsing through your phone or tablet.
  9. Portrait of you and your pet (dog/cat), you smiling to camera.
  10. Portrait of you and your pet (dog/cat), you snuggling and doting on your pet.
  11. Arranging photo frames or artwork on the wall, adding a personal touch to your space.
  12. Enjoying a moment of relaxation with a scented candle burning nearby.
  13. Playing a musical instrument or vinyl records, showcasing your hobbies and interests.
  14. Showing off your favorite magazine or coffee table book collection. Emphasis on business books you authored or books that impacted you as a Boss Babe.
  15. Watering your indoor plants.
  16. Reflecting on your day while gazing out the window, lost in thought.

In Your Kitchen

  1. Demonstrating your culinary skills by preparing a snack or beverage in the kitchen adjacent to your living room.
  2. Working on your laptop enjoying lunch (like a sandwich and drink).

In Your Yard (front or back)

  1. Headshot, close up.
  2. Half-figure / 3/4-figure portraits (various poses and expressions and eye directions).
  3. Full Figure portraits.
  4. Playing with pet.
  5. Sitting on front porch.
  6. Going for a walk.

At the Nearest Downtown District

  1. At a bustling outdoor cafe, engaging in work and drink.
  2. Walking along mainstreet, showcasing landmarks of interest in the background.
  3. Sitting on a bench or steps.

My lists got skimpy at the end here only because there would be mind-numbing repetition. But imagine all you could walk away form this photo day with. Imagine all the other unique elements that could enhance your personal photo session:

  • Throw in a handful of wardrobe changes and you can capture all the seasons plus professional and casual looks.
  • Throw in physical items that you use to provide your unique services (camera gear, painting supplies, nutritional elements / food, exercise equipment, etc.), products that you sell, or props that speak to your personal interests (cooking/backing, sporting equipment, puzzles/games, gardening, etc.).
  • Add your team mates, your business partner, your family, your clients.
  • Add other professional locations (like your office space, your shop, a client’s office or home, etc.) or personal locations (like a local park, a hiking trail, a local shop that compliments your brand or interests, etc.)

The variety of imagery you can capture, if planned well, is massive! All this work could land you enough photography to supply your marketing needs for 6 months, a year, even 5 years depending on your needs! Work with your photographer to stage the most efficient stories throughout your photo session. Ask for advice and input. But most of all, don’t be shy to ask for what you want and need.

KHP is offering a new 1-Month Photo Retainer Service that is perfect for professionals like you looking to build large and versatile photo collections like I’ve described here.
