Hi, I'm Kelly Heck, and I'm your photographer!
My mission in every session...
*to create a photograph that illustrates what words cannot say*
How I got into photography...
Finding an interest in photography very early in life, I found a position as an assistant photographer and worked my way up to a photographing position before I graduated from high school. I worked with this studio for over 5 years, working in both film and digital photography. I pursued a general associate’s degree at Carroll Community College in Westminster, Maryland, and completed my bachelor’s degree in Photography at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia.
At SCAD, I learned many facets of photography. I enjoyed the science and magic of traditional black and white photography, shooting, developing, and printing my own images in the darkroom. And I feel lucky to have printed in the color darkrooms as well. I worked with 35 mm film cameras and digital cameras, medium format film cameras and digital cameras, and large format film cameras including 4x5 and 8x10. Like many photography students, I shot with a plastic Holga camera too, and even made my own functional camera from a shoe box! I had the opportunity to experiment with alternative processes including cyan printing, salt printing, and contact printing. I took digital printing classes, digital retouching, studio lighting, and portraiture classes. I learned how to mount, mat, and frame my work and how to use archival methods and materials to ensure that my end product would last for years to come. I also won two major student photo contests and was published in PDNedu magazine (read more in my NEWS section)!
And I keep learning. Every day. I learn on the job. I learn from my colleagues. And I enjoy pursuing additional educational opportunities in photography, business and marketing, among other topics. I love this medium and will never stop evolving my skills!
About my passion...
I love that with photography, I can create something that nobody else sees. With a medium that relies solely on light, you learn how to enhance your subject by modifying your light, changing your angle, adding light or taking it away... learning to control your light sources is key to creating photographic art, no matter the subject.
Beyond my professional work, I personally and enjoy nature and wildlife photography. You may also enjoy the bodies of work that I have developed over the years: Bird Series "It's Not Because I'm Beautiful", Phobia Series (no title), and Snow Series "Beautiful Silence". Please feel welcome to ask me about them!
Interests, hobbies, and family...
I have many passions it’s hard to keep track of them all… to name some faves: baking and cooking (some of my favorite recipes? Zuppa Toscana, Chicken Pot Pie, Snickerdoodle Cupcakes, anything Mexican, Homemade Rice Krispie Treats, Cinnamon Pinwheels, Baklava, Lemon Meringue Pie... (can you tell I like desserts?), fine art (when it’s finished), juggling (I can juggle 5 balls!), and kayaking (love me some sunshine!). I have a super-cool cockatiel who is about 21 years old, Mr. Handi Mann, and a unbelievably adorable dog named Nala, who I rescued in 2013. I love spending time with my friends and family.
I wouldn't be who I am today without my artistic and loving family...
My sister is a professional goldsmith and silversmith developing her own line of jewelry.
My dad is a wood-turner and beekeeper, and plays the drums when he finds time.
My mom is a gardener, flower arranger, bonsai creator, and crafty beyond belief.
My grandmother worked the pottery wheel regularly back in the day, and she is a fantastic cook.
My grandfather is a cabinet maker that can design and build just about anything.
My aunt is the best seamstress I know, and another incredible family cook.
SURROUNDED BY THE ARTS! I am a lucky girl!
